Eco Emi - April 2014 - Review

Hi friends,

What is going on with Eco Emi these days? The past three boxes were just so-so, the last one was a dud for me and quite frankly this one was not any better. I am really hoping the company does not get too big for its original mission.
New to Eco Emi? It's a $15 monthly subscription box. You receive up to 7 samples (sometimes more), there is always a full size item - everything is organic, environmental friendly and cruelty free. I believe in the concept and am usually very happy with the products I receive, whether makeup, household or food.
Unfortunately, and as I mentioned above, this was not a great box, there still were a lot of stuff I was excited to try and the box always has a great payoff in that you get more than one you paid for. But, the products were just not exciting this time around, I am not going to say that they were boring, I just was not wowed. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great subscription to have - my opinion of course, I just feel like the company is taking a different direction these days...Still a fan though!

Eco Emi - April 2014

1. HomeSpun Northwest - Natural Eye Makeup Remover - $6 / 3 oz

I was so "excite" about this product since it is almost oil free (mentioned it a gazillion times before, i don't care for oily makeup removers). This one comes as a clear and somewhat soapy formula. The lavender scent is very faint, almost could not tell it's lavender. Unfortunately, and you can check the coordinating video for that, it does not remove waterproof mascara and or liner. I did try it on other types of makeup and it did an ok job, but quite frankly not as good as my Yves Rocher Gentle Eye Makeup Remover for Sensitive Eyes. B.

2. Desert Essence - Mega Mint + Cool Mint Toothpaste - $6.99 / 6.25 oz.

These are the kind of products I like to receive in my Eco Emi box; natural toothpastes!
This Desert Essence Whitening Plus Toothpaste  is made with Tea Tree Oil, a natural antibacterial ingredient, and is Floride , SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate)  and Gluten free. I love Tom's of Maine toothpaste (especially the fennel variety) and this toothpaste is very similar, enough bam to clean and refresh, without the harsh chemincals. B+.
The Desert Essence Tea Tree Toothpaste With Mint  version is slightly different. For some reason I found this one to be a bit more fluid and as a result the sample itself did not feel as powerful as the blue Withening one. It is still a good toothpaste for those of us who wish to stop ingesting chemicals in our products. B.

3. All Natural Face - Vegan Edible Love Dust in Cocoa Sparkle - $10 / Full Size

This is the part where I can no longer hide my age. This stuff is just ridiculous to me, an edible face and body shimmer. Why? Seriously, who does that!
Anyway, being from an obviously older generation (let's just say I was born way before Star Wars came out), I can see how this would be fun for teens and or young debutantes etc. (who uses the word debutante anymore!). This powder is packed with a subtle shimmer, I understand that the vanilla one is a gold shimmer and the cocoa one is a silver shimmer.
My only concern here is that it is made with corn starch and mica. Isn't Mica somewhat like glass? Why would I want to ingest glass powder?  The color itself is barely visible, so quite frankly that was a complete dud for me, in the like of the Shea Butter stink-bomb from the last month review. It went straight to the trash.
Now, if you have a teenage girl or a young lady at home who wants to have fun, or maybe you were born after the Matrix came out, you will probably love this stuff. But me? No thanks! F. (Yep, it made it to the Wall of Shame).

4. Organic Flavrz - Tropical Liquid Drink - $6.99 / box of 6 pouches

This stuff is actually pretty cool and I did not even follow the directions. you are supposed to mix it with x amount of water with various concentration levels depending on the intensity of flavor that you want. I had one glass that was pretty intense and liked it a lot but used the remainder as a spritz drink, just adding a dash to a glass of seltzer water, and it was delicious and refreshing. It's a bit pricey but what a great alternative to those powder pouches (come on, you know the ones) currently on the market. B+. I probably would give it a better rating if it were not for the packaging itself - it's not resealable!

Organic Flavrz - Tropical Peach Drink

5. Honey Stinger - Honey Organic Stinger waffle - $22.24 / 16 waffles.

I know that honey is often referred to as liquid gold, but this price is just way over the top! They are actually cheaper on Amazon (here's the link).

Honey Stinger waffles

They are actually a generous size and quite filling. The center of the waffle is loaded with honey, so they are not going cheap on this product, it's not honey flavored, it's actual honey inside. It is a good snack to have with a cup of tea. I did find them a bit dry at first bite, but ended up liking this waffle quite a lot. It helps that I love honey. B+. I just wish they were less expensive because I could it them all day long.

6. Ramblin River - Sunflower Seeds - $2.50 / seed packet

That's cool. I would like to fancy myself as a gardener, you know, I scratch dirt in spring and summer and grow a few tomatoes here and there. So to me, receiving seed is a great gift and I know exactly what to do with them too! Sunflower grow tall and think, making them a great natural privacy fence, further, you can keep the flowers as Fall decors and the seeds can be used again to feed the Blue Jays in the yard. It's the gift that keeps on giving! A.

7. Fortune Cookie Soap - Tree of Life Collection - Bath Fizzy -  $4.95.

This was a freeby item, not indicated on the description card I received! I heard of the brand and received other items from them. I understand that they do a quarterly box with a collection of soaps and other bath products for $19.99/ 3 months and have been thinking about purchasing one myself.
These bath fizzies are actually pretty neat. They take some time to melt so do make sure you put them in the tub as you start running your water. The scent in this Tree of Life collection reminds me of cut grass, very spring like. I tend to like warmer scents like amber or vanilla, but this one was actually very nice. Plus, it did not leave any green residue at the bottom of my tub. It did require a bit of rinsing but otherwise, not a chore to clean. B+.

Fortune Cookie Soap - Bath Fizzy

As you can see, it was not a great box this month, it was just okay for me. I am still anxious to receive my box each month, it is always a special treat regardless of whether the products are dud or not, at least I am not spending a huge amount of money, and I always find that the pay off is well worth the investment.

Ipsy Glam Bag - April 2014 - Full Review

Hi friends,

It's becoming more and more exciting each month when my Ipsy Glam Bag shows up on my door steps. I am so glad I am subscribing to this makeup sample monthly "bag" as it is saving me oodles of money on makeup!
If you are new to my blog or youTube Channel, Ipsy is a monthly makeup subscription, for $10/month, you receive a cosmetic bag filled with up to 5 samples, some are travel sizes, others are full size. This is my third bag this year and so far, I have been very pleased with the items I have received. So, without further ado, let us dive into the full review for the April 2014 bag! Doesn't it look awesome already?

April Ipsy Glam Bag

1. Dr. Brandt - Microdermabrasion - Skin Exfoliant - $78/2 oz

The dr. brandt® microdermabrasion gently sweeps away dead skin cells and softens skin texture, which enables better absorption of skincare products and helps diminish the appearance of fine lines, acne marks, and skin discolorations. A great at home alternative to professional clinical treatments. Safe to use for all skin types. For best results use with dr. brandt® skincare products. (Quote from Ipsy website)

Dr. Brandt - Microdermabrasion

This is a product I have tried in the past, probably from another sample subscription I receive. It is an okay microdermabrasion, which is not the same thing as a scrub. This one, I recall, is very similar to Mary Kay's Microdermabrasion system, at least in texture. It feels like a fluid cream filled with tiny sand like beads. I prefer microdermabrasion to regular scrubs in that the grit itself is made of same size particles as apposed to pieces and chunks of seeds for instance. It is a good product with a light citrus scent but I don't think it is the best on the market and the price is prohibitive to me ($78 / 2oz). I still prefer my option of mixing baking soda with my cleanser. B.

2. Big Sexy Hair - Root Pump - $17.95 / 17 oz

The Sexy Hair Root Pump Volumizing Spray Mousse helps create big volume by pumping up hair at the root. It dispenses out as a spray and turns into a mousse to give tresses tons of volume. Apply to damp hair at the root to achieve phenomenal lift or to dry hair to activate textural volume. Resists humidity and provides lift, fullness and medium hold. Great for fine/medium hair types.  (Quote from Ipsy website)

Big Sexy Hair - Root pump

This is another product I have used in the past. I don't put a lot of product on my hair, I find that the following day I need to wash it off otherwise my hair looks dull and unmanageable. This is a good one if you have some kind of event you need to attend and want an extra lift with hold or if you hair is heavy and straight and just can shape it any other way than flat. I find that the mist is fine enough to provide coverage without creating "hot spots" and the effects lasts pretty much all day.  I just don't like the fact that we are still using aerosol cans for hair products. B+.

Other Big Sexy Hair products I  like:

Big Sexy Hair Salon Travel Kit - $ 12.99
This is actually a good purchase worth the price, sometimes travel sizes cost more, not the case here and you get to try their shampoos and conditioners as well.

Big Sexy Hair Blow Dry Volumizing Gel - 8.... $ 16.99
This is great for blow drying or flat iron processing. I find that it leaves my hair silky smooth, no frizz!

3. Cailyn - Lip Balm in Apple Pink - $19.00

Indulge in colors that last and formulas that enrich! This ultra matte, super moisturizing lip balm offers you rich colors with amazing staying power. (Quote from Ipsy website)

Cailyn - Tinted Lip Balm in Apple Pink

Well, here is an interesting product and before I delve into the actual formula and color (which I like), let me start with what I do not like: the packaging!
I think of tinted lip balm as an on-the-go pick me up, something I can throw in my purse or better yet, tuck in my pocket. I am not sure what the company has in mind here but the packaging is just not working, at least for me it's not. Sure it comes with it's own brush, neatly inserted into the lid, but this is taking way too much space into a cosmetic bag, never mind a pocket. That being said, it is rather neat and innovative, so I guess that leaves me confused, I am not sure whether I hate it or love it!
Moving on, the formula is outstanding! This is a creamy, velvety, almost matte lip balm which I find to be very pigmented, it's almost a lipstick! The color I received is Apple Pink and is perfect for my fair skin tone. And it does not bulge. So if you like long staying lip color that is not drying (as they often do) this is for you! Great product, I recommend it if you don't mind the packaging. A-. (It would be an A+ and Wall of Fame if it were not for the packaging).

4. Urban Decay - 24/7 - Glide On Velvet Eye Liner - $20

A must for smoky-eye fanatics: an ultra-plush version of UD’s creamy, waterproof 24/7 formula. Create perfectly blended-out or rich, precise lines that are blacker-than-black.  (Quote from Ipsy website)

Urban Decay - 24/7 Glide on Eye Liner
I really like Urban Decay, their products are always excellent quality with great results and staying power and let me tell you, this liner packs some serious punch!
I don't think I have ever tried a liner with that much staying power, the stuff is not going anywhere! It's just too bad they only offer the jet black version as I would love to try on a dark brown or maybe a plum. I love this! A+.

5. Elizabeth Mott - Pop! Goes the shadow in Champagne - $12.99

The Elizabeth Mott pop! goes the eyeshadow is the ultimate eyeshadow that's long lasting, easy to apply, and effortlessly blends. Buildable colors will take you from subtle highlights to dramatic smokey eyes. With pop! goes the shadow, eye shadow creasing is a thing of the past. Get ready to try the eye shadow that will change your life! (Quote from Ipsy website)

Elizabeth Mott - Pop! Goes the Shadow - in Champagne

This is such a gorgeous color, perfect as a highlighter or over the lid. I usually prefer matte shadows, but this one has just the right amount of shimmer that it does not look over the top. Elizabeth Mott has two other shades in this collection, and I want them all! A+.

Eco Emi - March 2014 - Full Review

Hi friends,

I don't know what's going on with Eco Emi, maybe they are running out of innovative suppliers or their switch to a fully functional website has been overwhelming, but THIS was not a good box!
For those of you who are new to either my blog or Eco Emi, this is a sample subscription box you receive every month for a mere $15/month. I personally think this is a very worthy deal considering the amount of money I used to spend on cosmetics and skin care. The best thing about Eco Emi is that the owner, Christine, focuses on organic, environment friendly, cruelty free products. There is also a combination of skincare, cosmetics, household and food items in each box. Generally there are up to 7 (sometimes more) items and always a full size.
What I like best about Eco Emi is the focus on mom and pop and Etsy shops and I rarely receive an item that is not made in the USA.
That being said, and having been a subscriber since late 2012, I dare say that 2014 has been disappointing, thus far.

March 2014 - Eco Emi Box
1. Kitts Kernel - Red Popcorn - $6.25/ 1.5 lb bag. This popping corn is "non GMO and grown naturally". I was eager to try this since I never had red corn popcorn before. If you check out my coordinating video, you can see the result (and tasting) of this original popcorn. Quite frankly I did not think it tasted anything different from regular popcorn, the kids found it to be very blend and needed sugar added to it. It's just popcorn. Maybe it's healthier since it is non GMO and totally natural, but I was not wowed by this item. C+

2. The Lano Company - 2IN1 Lip Therapy and Cuticle Treatment - $5/tube.
I am not a big fan of multiple use products and I think I mentioned that before. To me the idea of using something on my lips, then my cheeks or in this case either on my hands or my lips is just gross (sorry). This treatment is "infused with jojoba, coconut and sweet almond oils". As a lip treatment, I felt it was too thick and tacky, very similar to a very condensed version of Vaseline. But, as a cuticle treatment...OMG! This is just outstanding! I love the fact that it has a slanted applicator, it goes on well around your nail base and does a great job on those stubborn dry skin patches on my thumbs. Overall I would rate it as a B+, but as cuticle treatment alone, definitely A.

3. La Fresh - Eco Beauty Waterproof Makeup Remover + Nail Polish Remover -
I mentioned in the past that I do not care for eye makeup removers that leave a greasy residue around my lids. I feel that the product (whether mineral or other oil) lodges itself inside my wrinkles and interferes with whatever eye cream I apply afterwards. So I was very excited about trying these Makeup Remover wipes since they are oil free and infused with lavender. Overall, they did a great job on my stubborn eyeliner, one or two swipes and gone. I did not think the texture was smooth enough, it's not gritty or anything like that, but they are not cotton pads either. The price ($9.99 / pouch of 24 wipes) makes it a good option for travel rather than everyday use. B.

La Fresh Nail Polish and Eye Makeup Remover Wipes

I thought the Nail Polish Remover wipes were a great concept. These days I have been suffering with very brittle nails, probably a combination of poor nutrition and too much nail polish and chemicals like Formaldehyde. The company boasts that one wipe will take care of all 10 nails, and it did, but not without some serious elbow grease. By the time my left hand was done, the tiny wipe was soaked in with color from the nail polish I had just removed and it was hard to find a clean spot. The wipe itself is very soft and there is no harsh scent (a plus), but it was not as effective on my second hand because of the saturation from the polish I had just removed. These are also very pricey ($10.99 / 20 wipes) when considering you would be better off using one wipe per hand. Another great option for travel or at the office, but I would not use them on a regular basis. The wipes need to be bigger - just my opinion. B.

4. Purely You Minerals - Lip Gloss in Dawn - $8 / tube. I have received other Purely You Minerals products with my Eco Emi subscription and as far as I can recall, I have been satisfied with their products. This lip gloss to me is more like a balm or sheer tinted lipstick. There was not much "gloss" to it. I am not sure if it was the actual tube I received or whether the formula is just the way I received it, but I felt this was a bit dry. I do love the color (Dawn), it is a brick/coral that works well with my fair complexion. Just not a fan of the formula even though it is "vegan, and all natural vitamins, oils and minerals". B.

Purely You Minerals - lip Balm in Dawn

5. Kuli kuli - Almond Bar - $2.89/bar. Why is it that Nutritious can't also be Delicious! This Almond bar is loaded with vitamins and medicinal plants like Moringa (which I never heard of before). It is also Gluten-Free and Vegan.

I was super excited about this product, having skipped breakfast on the day I filmed the video for it and really could not wait to eat it. Turns out this is just awful. I don't even know where to begin so let's start with the texture: it is a very dense/solid yet feeling moist type bar that is nothing like other cereal bars. To me it looks like macerated plants packed into a bar with nuts stuck in between (maybe the picture below helps with the description).

Kuli Kuli - Almond Bar

It smells weird, a mix of bitter almond and other nuts but quite frankly not appetizing, it's not like you prepare yourself to take a bite into something that is about to be very satisfying. To me, health food needs to be enticing too, if I feel like I am about to be grossed out, it cuts the fun out of eating, and that is what this bar did to me. So of course I had to have other people in the house try it (just in case I am too biased in my weirdness). Well, the kids passed on sight (I can't say I blame them), my husband tried it and said "what is THAT?" promptly giving it back to me, he did not want a second bite. One of my friends was starving too and only took two bites, shaking his head, feeling he's just been had into eating something good for him and asked for something to rinse his mouth with. Well, to make a long story short, it looks weird, it tastes weird - not sure how to describe the taste here and it's unbelievably expensive too ($2.89 / bar). D-. Almost a complete fail, the fact that it is nutritious redeems it and I may have to consider other flavors should I ever decide to eat healthy again, but at this price, does not look like it's happening anytime soon!

6 - Karitex - 100 % Shea Butter - $10/200 gm pouch. If you tally up the price of all the products I received in the March box, it was way over the price of the subscription itself, making it a great buy.
H-O-W-E-V-E-R...This was by far the worst product I have received from Eco Emi and I will go as far as saying that it was the worst product I have ever tried, EVER!
Shea Butter is supposed to be one of the best moisturizers for your skin, alongside coconut oil. This was a huge supply too, so imagine my excitement. I even had plans on transferring it to a nice looking jar and lather myself every night with the stuff. Well, that was until I opened the pouch!

Karitex - 100 % Shea Butter

Let me start with the texture. It feels like solidified coconut oil, and that's ok since the product melts with your skin temperature and it is a great moisturizer, you can also use it as a shaving cream. But, it stinks! It smells like rancid butter or putrid water, whatever olfactory insult comes at you first. It not only horrible as a scent, you also can't get rid of it as it fills up the room with its "natural scent". I had no idea Shea Butter smelled so bad. Of course I could have emulsified it with some aromatherapy oil but did not feel like going through the trouble. I don't even know what to say about this product outside of DON'T BUY NATURAL 100% SHEA BUTTER - it STINKS! F.

Well, that was my review for the March 2014 Eco Emi box, there were some products that were nice to try, but nothing here really caught my attention as a winner (or repurchase). Quite disappointing to say the least.
