Eco Emi Box - July 2014 - Full Review

Hi friends,

And here we go again with a so-so box from Eco Emi! I am nowhere near cancelation, but lets face it, if you have been reading my blog and watching my videos for a while, you must have been tired of my ongoing raving about how great this $15/month subscription box is. Well, since the beginning of 2014 I dare say it has left to desire with one mediocre box after the other and this one was no exception.
Some of the products in this July box were exciting to receive but not all that exciting to try, so let's just dive right into it:

1. Essential Oil Bath Salts by Oils4EvrE1.

First, let me start by saying that it took 4Evr for me to be able to decipher the company's name, thus making me feel like an idiot. Apparently it reads as "oils for everyone", well duh then!
These are coming from an Etsy shop (love that) and $5 each bag, which is okay when considering that they are homemade. That being said, I received the Lavender one (pretty excited) but found them to be too lightly scented, further, a portion of the salts never melted in my bath water, thereby leaving a gritty residue at the bottom (not too comfortable when one is attempting to relax). They're just okay for me - will not purchase. $5.

2. Tropical Cookies by Caveman Cookies

I like the idea of a cookie that is gluten and dairy free - it makes me feel as though I am cutting the guilt in half. These were chewy in texture, almost like fruit rubber and pretty good too, unfortunately not filling (I kind of knew that ahead of time) and well, let's just say not sinful enough. $5.95 for a box of 8 cookies. A bit steep but they are individually wrapped, making them great for on the go snacking.

4. After Sun Cooling Lotion by BeeUtifullyOrganic:

I love Etsy and mom and pop shops, I find that it is always a good opportunity to support American businesses and small communities. Unfortunately I found nothing extraordinary out of this $3/jar worth of coconut oil and Aloe. It's a basic emollient you are supposed to put in the fridge in order to provide the "cooling effect". To me, it was mostly coconut oil with not much of a coconut scent. Very basic indeed.

5. Bug-A-Boo! Natural Inset Repellant by Wellinhand:

This was actually quite a treat. This Eucalyptus/Thyme or Rosemary/Vanilla scented tiny miracle kept mosquitoes away from me for an entire evening on my deck. And for a mosquito magnet like me, that is quite a performance. But, it's rather expensive ($11.99 /2 oz) and when considering that it comes in a liquid spray-able formula, I can see myself going through the stuff in less than a week. That being said, if you plan a vacation by the lake or a camping trip, this is a must!

6. Aquatowel by the Aquatowel Company:

These are $2.50 per 5 towels. I really do not use this kind of product so it would be hard for me to judge them fairly. You can put these in the fridge as well. One advantage is their large size so unlike most product of its kind, you do get some mileage out of them and since the individual packages are flat enough, they fit just fine in your purse when traveling. These are unscented too.

7. Diva Stick by the All Natural Face:

Now, here is a bargain for you! $4.80 for a jumbo black Khol eyeliner that is neither greasy nor dry. It glides on beautifully and stays on too. I would recommend this black liner, I found it to be well above the quality of most drugstore brands and for a fraction of the cost.

8. Guatemala Organic and Fair Trade Coffee by Cool Bean Perks:

I am seriously addicted to caffeine, so THIS was a very welcome addition to the July Box. Unfortunately, while I am addicted, I simply cannot tell the difference between beans. There are folks out there who can smell a cup of Joe and tell you whether they were offered Jamaica Blue Mountain or Starbucks Verona. I am not that particular, I just want caffeine if you know what I mean. That said, it was a good up of coffee, a bit on the strong and bitter side for me, but otherwise pretty good. $8.50 per pound so it's a decent price for exotic coffee.

So there you have it, the July Box and again this was just an okay box for me. I wish Eco Emi would pick up the pace and return to more exciting boxes but at $15 per month, I still think it's a good buy and I still love the element of surprise when the box hits my front door!

Ipsy - Glam Bag - July 2014 - Full Review

Hi friends,

This was a so-so bag for me, maybe one of the most disappointing from Ipsy since I became a subscriber. If you are new to Ipsy, it is a monthly sample subscription for cosmetics name brands, mostly makeup, for which you pay $10 (monthly). I still think it is a great bargain when considering the size of the samples (most are deluxe or travel size and there is always a full size). Ipsy is a great way to discover new brands, or if you are like me, get your monthly makeup fix while saving big time money! Here is what I received for my July 2014 bag:

                                                                                                                                                                       1. Bare Minerals - 5 in 1 - Creamy Mineral Eye Shadow in Divine Wine :

At first I was not thrilled about receiving this item, to be honest it is the exact same color than the Maybeline Color Tattoo in Deep Forest ( part of the Leather Collection). But, this turned out to be a good surprise! This eye shadow glides on and blends beautifully, leaving a wonderful hint of taupe (the one I received is called Diving Wine). Further, it stays on all day! It did create a crease line, but I managed to reduced that effect afterwards by ensuring my lids were properly primed prior to application. I do recommend this product, though it is a bit pricey, so if you are on a budget, the Maybeline Color Tattoo is just as good and provides the same effect. $18.

2. Hang Ten - #8 - Sun Tanning Oil:

I really did not care for this product, it does not help that I am the wrong customer for this kind of item, I do not tan, at all and avoid the sun like the Bubonic Plague. It has a pleasant scent, it was not overly greasy but as a tanning oil, I am sorry as I can offer no help. $11.99.

3. Pixi - Tinted Brilliance Lip Balm in Unique:

Here is an interesting product. It goes on as a translucent balm with a hint of shimmer (almost glitter) but reacts to your body temperature and turns to a "mood" shade. Unfortunately, it just turned out a pale - as in barely noticeable - shade of pink for me. The formula is okay. I am not crazy about this and cannot recommend it since it was a bit of a downer and at $14, no thanks!

4. Whet - Nail Polish in Garish (that's the name I gave it) Blue:

I am sorry, I could not bring myself to try this, not even on my toes! The color is just plain wrong for me. This is a runoff the mill formula as judged by its fluidity and rather lousy tiny brush. But if you like it, the real name is Facetious. $18 per bottle, to me it's the equivalent of a bad joke, or maybe a Halloween that went awry.

5. Be Fine - Food Skin Care - Daily Moisturizer:

This was supposed to be a moisturizer with Rosemary and Pomegranate but it turned out to be a completely unscented dud. This felt nice enough as a hand cream but honestly and on my skin, it was just too oily. I am not recommending this one either. $24 for nothing more than a very basic moisturizer, I don't think so.

So there you have it, my full review on the July Ipsy Glam Bag. I really was not thrilled with it.  Aside from the cute little pink pouch and the  Bare Minerals Eye Shadow, this bag was by far my least favorite this year.

Ipsy Glam Bag - June 2014 Review

Hi friends,

This is my review for the items I received in the June 2014 Ipsy Glam Bag. For those of you not familiar with Ipsy, it is a monthly cosmetics sample subscription for which you pay $10 (shipping included). Every month, Ipsy will send you up to 5 deluxe size items (there is always a full size). I really like Ipsy as it helps me curb on my makeup spending, not to mention discovery new products and brands at a really low cost.

Ipsy Glam Bag - June 2014

1. Mark Anthony - Dream Waves - Beach Spray: This is another one of those sprays that is meant to give you a "just came back from the beach" look, aka salt spray. I like the look but hate the feel. This spray smells divine (coconut) and while it did do a good job on tousled hair and maintained the look throughout the day, I needed to wash my hair on day two. This has some serious hold and my hair was not manageable after that. So I would say this is good if you want a one time look only. I don't think I would purchase this on my own. $8.99

2. NYX Butter Gloss - Crème Brulee: This is a "small enough to toss in a wristlet" gloss but don't be fooled by the size as it packs on serious results. I love the formula for this gloss, glides on beautifully, not tacky yet rich and moisturizing. Only one drawback: I am not crazy about the color I received as I find it to be too pale/nude. That being said it goes very well on any other lipstick for a quick moisturizing shine. $4.99

3. Be a Bombshell - Mascara: RUN, yes, RUN but in the opposite direction. This mascara is awful! It is nothing more than a generic formula (clumpy, flaky) with the worst smell in the world when it comes to cosmetics: burnt plastic and crude oil. Who wants to put THAT on their lashes. I sure did not, I tried it once for the sake of this review and trashed it immediately afterwards. $8.99

4. Ofra - Eyebrow pencil - Dark Brown: excellent formula not too waxy yet not dry. It matches my brows as if it was made for me AND it stays on all day. I strongly recommend this pencil. $13

5. Real Tree - For her - Eau de Parfum: This is a very nice summer scent, a bit of floral a lot of citrus. Smells fresh and cooling. Neat. I like it. $24.99

So, aside from the heinous mascara, this was a pretty good bag. The pouch itself is also very pretty and designed by makeup artist Rebecca Minkoff.

Here is my open bag video for those of you who want to see a demo of all the products mentioned above.
