No-Sew Easy window seat

Julia A. from Ohio submitted this project today:  No-Sew Easy Window Seat.

This is so easy to make and can be used either in a kids' room, a basement, a mud room (leaving the side of the crates open for extra storage) or even a quick garden bench for those extra guests.
In fact it is so easy to make that the pictures will speak for themselves!

This is what you need:

  • Three crates in a color of your choice.
  • One piece of wood cut to size, must be flush or about one inch over the crates.
  • Two layers of foam padding, if you have those egg crate mattress pads that once were a big craze years back, they would be perfect.
  • Nice matching fabric, in this case, Julia A. used some leftover fabric from her living room curtains (the style is Provincial).
  • One ever useful roll of duct tape.
  • Scissors.
How she did it:

Cut the fabric to size so that it generously overlaps on the underside of the board. Cut the foam that it slightly overlaps the wood frame (makes for a nice pad with rounded edges once the fabric is tucked under).  Place the padding in between the fabric and the board.

Fix the fabric on the underside with the duct tape, you can also use staples or upholstery nails. I would not worry about the corner, just fold over in an angle and tape.
I am assuming she tied the crates together for more stability.

Top the crate with the new seat and voila!

Options:

For those of you who like to complicate things a bit...

  • Drill holes in the board and add fabric covered buttons to give the seat a tufted look.
  • Turn the outside crates, only the middle crate, or all three crates to use them as extra storage for baskets, cooking books etc.
  • Turn the crates open side up and add a matching fabric lining or insert baskets. Use them as storage bins and use the seat as a lid...instant storage ottoman, foot rest or pet bed/bench with treats and toys stashed inside the crates, also great to stash away magazines.
  • Better yet, use four crates (with a square wood panel) and make it a square ottoman or coffee table.
The possibilities are endless.

A great idea and awesome, simple,  execution. Thank you Julia A.!
